Backcountry Hunter vs PreHunt

By Austin Christensen · Updated October 23, 2026

PreHunt plans the hunt: gear, weather, and the ground. Backcountry Hunter is the gear loadout. Plenty of hunters will want one of those jobs from a maps app and the other from a loadout app.

Backcountry Hunter is a gear loadout app for hunters. It is not affiliated with Petersen's Backcountry Hunter magazine or with Backcountry Hunters & Anglers (BHA).

What PreHunt publishes

On October 23, 2026, prehunt.app described PreHunt as a hunting gear inventory and loadout planner with strategies, weather forecasts, and loadout optimization. The homepage also describes property boundaries, markers, stalking or drive-hunt strategies, photo import that fills in category, brand, weight, and where a garment sits on the body, and loadouts built for different weather.

PreHunt's pricing page, checked the same day, lists a free plan at 0 USD per month with unlimited gear items, up to 5 loadouts, and up to 5 saved strategies on the field map, and Premium at 9.90 USD per month with unlimited loadouts, AI loadout preview images, publishing loadouts to the community, unlimited strategies, and 20 AI credits a month.

The same day, prehunt.app said members can publish their loadouts publicly. The pricing page lists “Publish your loadouts to the community” on Premium, and a public answer says gear and loadouts stay private until you publish a loadout yourself.

PreHunt's own answers say weather comes from Open-Meteo for up to 16 days, the product is in English and Swedish with Swedish hunting seasons built in, and the field map adds Lantmäteriet layers in Sweden. Terrain and satellite are described as available everywhere.

Those sentences are from prehunt.app and prehunt.app/pricing on October 23, 2026. They are not a review, and this page has no score for either product.

How to choose

Choose PreHunt when you want the forecast, the wind, and a drawn route in the same place as the packing list. Their site is explicit that this includes property boundaries and a scent indicator along a planned walk. Backcountry Hunter will not do that part.

Choose Backcountry Hunter when the work is the kit: categories, worn versus consumable weight, a rifle or bow build, creator affiliate links, and public elk loadouts. Keep using a maps app next to it. The platform guide is how the loadout tools fit together.

Common questions

How is Backcountry Hunter different from PreHunt?
PreHunt's site describes gear inventory plus hunt planning: weather, wind, property boundaries, and stalk or drive routes. Backcountry Hunter is a gear loadout app. It tracks pack weight and weapon builds and publishes hunting loadouts. It does not draw a boundary or show a forecast.
What does PreHunt charge?
PreHunt publishes a free plan and a Premium plan on its pricing page. The amounts are in the comparison table on this page and on prehunt.app/pricing. Check that page before you buy, because plans change. Backcountry Hunter is free to start; this site's pricing page is the current account offer.
Does Backcountry Hunter include a map?
Backcountry Hunter is not a maps or scouting app like onX or HuntStand. It does not show property boundaries, waypoints, or hunt-area maps.
Is PreHunt an elk loadout library?
PreHunt's public pages describe English and Swedish, with Swedish hunting seasons built in, and extra map layers in Sweden. They do not describe an elk loadout library. Backcountry Hunter's elk guides and the public elk page are gear lists for archery and rifle elk hunts. They are not a map of the unit.
